Communities In Schools of Richmond began serving Richmond Public Schools in 1996. During the 2006-07 school year, CIS coordinated services, programs and resources touched over 14,000 students in 24 schools. These opportunities provided students the CIS Five Basics.
The CIS Five Basics
Every child needs and deserves:
- A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult;
- A safe place to learn and grow;
- A healthy start and a healthy future;
- A marketable skill to use upon graduation; and
- A chance to give back to peers and community.
Some Facts about the CIS of Richmond
- More than 14,000 students and their families were directly connected to resources through CIS during the 2006-2007 school year.
- CIS of Richmond served 24 Richmond Public Schools in 2006-2007.
- 1,312 students received intensive services in 2006-2007.
- 526 volunteers contributed 10,410 hours of services in the schools. As a result:
- Students in need of mentors and tutors were matched with a caring adult and/or service.
- Special events, projects and initiatives were completed at many of our network schools.
- We currently have partnerships with over 65 community agencies, organizations and businesses.
- Among CIS-tracked students:
- 70 percent improved attendance.
- 79 percent had fewer incidents of discipline.
- 67 percent improved academic performance. (First year of providing academic support)
- 97 percent were promoted to the next grade.
- 100 percent of eligible seniors graduated.
- 0 percent dropped out, lower than the national average of 4.8 percent and lower than the estimated 6-10 percent dropout rate for student populations similar to those served by CIS.
Worth magazine declared Communities In Schools as one of the “top 100 non-profits most likely to save the world” not only because of our results with children and their families, but also because of our cost effectiveness and efficiency in leveraging resources.
